The Monarch butterfly is a unique and extraordinary creature. The adult lives four to five weeks, except an annual generation called the “Methuselah Generation”. Born in the fall, this special generation lives for seven to eight months. This remarkable generation flies from the U.S. and Canada to the center of Mexico for the winter and then begins a northward journey. When they reach the U.S., a relay begins: their short-lived offspring, with a life span of four to five weeks, continue their trek north over many generations, traveling as far into North America as time and weather allows. I caught up with this one in my backyard. I can understand why they like to rest on almost every flower along the way.

Reproduced by giclee printing from an acrylic painting on illustration board.
