“A man who works with his hands is a laborer
A man who works with his hands and mind is a craftsman
A man who works with his hands, mind and heart is an artist”

When I was asked to create a poster for the Clayton Decoy Show, my first thought was to do a carver working on a decoy in a shop with Calumet Island in the background. Then I thought it would be more profound if only the tools and artistry were portrayed, for an artist’s immortality is his art.

I gathered a collection of tools and decoys I had accumulated over the years and set them up in front of a window in my studio. I used a flag from Abraham Lincoln’s time with 35 stars to represent that this was the 35th.Annual Decoy Show.

To give it an antique look, I used a technique called oil rub which I learned from one of my former students Nick Wright, a free lance illustrator who studied at Ringling School of Art.
