There is magic in morning as a new day is born. Often the air is as still and silent as a church. It is rare for me to see it because by nature I’m not often an early riser. Although when I do I find it most rewarding and perhaps my limited exposure has prevented me from being jaded.
On this summer morning I was walking around Monhegan Island just after daybreak. The chairs on the Island Inn porch were all lined up waiting for their days occupants like taxis at the airport. Their white spindles and rails created a visual rhythm that echoed the thousands of conversations that have taken place here over the last century.
Reproduced from a watercolor painting on illustration board.
