Those that spend a lot of time on the river know that May and October are special. Dramatic changes occur in these months as a kind of changing of the guard by the seasons. May can start with a balmy day that would rival July or a blinding snowstorm. But regardless of the weather the river is serene and peaceful. This acrylic painting is a view of Singer Castle seen from a Hill overlooking the St. Lawrence Valley on a May day. The cerulean sky dominates the palette with bursts of pastel colors from new leaves and buds and bark that shows through the thin veil of foliage.
Singer Castle was built by Frederick Bourne in 1905 as an island hunting retreat. Bourne was a self made millionaire who had by the age of 36 worked his way up to president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
