Ogdensburg was once nicknamed “Little New York” because it was the next biggest city north of New York City, but that was a very long time ago. The train station was once one of the busiest in the country. If you ask an old timer about the station they always recall during the World Wars when thousands gathered for the farewells and welcome homes of the troops. For many this station held memories of happy hellos and sad good-byes.
In the years that followed cars replaced passenger trains, trucks hauled most of the freight and the Ogdensburg Prescott Bridge ended the train and passenger ferries. Sadly today, almost all of the tracks that connected the North Country are gone. The abandoned station that you see here is what it looked like for many years when on the eve of a restoration project that would have been a renaissance to the building, it was completely destroyed by a fire.
