If time were money there would be none more valuable than a warm summer afternoon sitting on the backside of Monhegan Island watching the ocean breathing gently against these cliffs. On a day like this it’s hard to image the rage that these rocks endure from violent storms that have been known to produce fifty foot waves.
The harbor on Monhegan is located on the west side of the Island. A twenty minute hike brings you to the headlands a spectacular series of cliffs and rock formations that are reputed to be the highest on the east coast. This is a view from the lower rocks looking across Squeaker Cove to 160 foot high cliffs of Blackhead. These massive rock formations form the islands defense against the fury of winter seas.
Reproduced from an acrylic painting on hardboard.
