Frederic Remington was born in Canton, NY in 1861. His career as an artist blossomed in the 1880s as he portrayed the wild-west to the American public in publications such as Harper’s Weekly and Collier’s. By 1900 he was looking for a summer retreat and purchased an island in Chippewa Bay which he named Ingleneuk. It had a house, boathouse and dock. The winds from the St. Lawrence in this area are often strong, inspiring such works as ‘Howl of the Weather’. Remington died in 1909 at the age of 48 from complications after an emergency appendectomy. He is buried in Canton, NY.
This acrylic painting depicts Remington’s place as it appears today. The island was renamed Temagami Island. Reproduced by gic;ee printing.
