One can only be held in awe when almost silently, except for the rhythmic drum of the massive engine pounding like the heart of a dinosaur, a Great Lakes freighter passes you on the St Lawrence River. Bathed in the pastel twilight of a summer’s evening it threads cautiously through the rivers islands as the metal giant’s shadow like that of a mountain engulfs you.
