Monhegan Island is a unique microcosm ten miles off the coast of Maine. A small island, only about a mile long and half a mile wide, it is rich in history, possibly dating back to the time of the Vikings. With about 75 year round residents, mostly lobster persons and their families, some go back several generations. Change comes slow to Monhegan and a New England patina covers the island in an aura of pensiveness. In the summer the population swells to about 800 and hundreds of day trippers come from Port Clyde and Boothbay harbor to hike the trails along the back of the island which offers spectacular views of the 160 foot cliffs, the tallest on the eastern coast of the United States. The only vehicles on the island are owned by the lobstermen who use them to haul luggage and supplies, making walking a necessity.
Shown in this oil painting is the Island Inn, a 32 room hotel built 1870. At the left is the village dock, the only one on the island where people and goods are brought ashore. Reproduced by giclee printing
