Ten years after completing “October Morning”, I decided to do another painting of whitetail deer. I chose a photograph I had taken on one of my many reference gathering excursions of a small stream in the Adirondack Mountains near Saranac Lake. Although it was very cold that day, the stream had not frozen over, I suspect because it was spring fed. A fresh snow that had fallen the night before which dramatically contrasted against the darkness of the open water. After cutting up the original photos and rearranging them into a composition that satisfied me, I did a full size sketch and added the deer crossing in the background. The acrylic painting on hardboard that followed, took nearly a year to complete. It commemorates the Adirondack Park Centennial 1892-1992.
