The river has many moods. I’ve seen sunsets here as dramatic as anywhere on this planet. But sometimes there is an esoteric stillness on the river that can hypnotize the soul, when light weaves a tapestry of rock, water and tree. It is in these whispering moments that the relevance of time ceases to exist, if only for fleeting instant.
Siegfried Sassoon wrote in 1920 a poem called Miracles, here are a few lines from it:
And then great clouds gathered and burst in spumes of green
That plunged into the water; and the sun came out
On glittering islands thronged with orchards scarlet-bloomed
And rosy-plumed flamingos flashed across the scene…
O, but the beauty of their freedom made me shout…
And when I woke I wondered where on earth I’d been.
Reproduced from an acrylic on hardboard by giclee printing.
