Along the eastern end of the Thousand Islands lies about 60 shoals and 70 small islands known as the Brockville Narrows. This passage appears wide enough from shore but if you have ever been out in a small boat when two ships are passing each other there, you acquire a new perspective on it.

It was mid-October, I was in Morristown, NY, when I saw the Gordon C. Leitch plowing it’s way up river against a stiff wind.  It was a cool overcast day except for a small break in the clouds that illuminated the bow of this vintage laker.  The Gordon C. Leitch is a 730 foot bulk carrier with a gross cargo capacity of 29,700 tons.  Designed to travel only on the Great Lakes, she was built in 1968. Her home port is Toronto, Ontario

Reproduced from an acrylic painting on hardboard
